Water stain on the ceiling: how to find the source
A water stain can come from the roof, from the plumbing of the floor above, or from condensation. Checking whether the stain grows after rain is the most practical way to narrow down the source.

Quick distinction
- If it grows after rain, suspicion of the roof or facade increases
- If it also grows on days without rain, it may be plumbing
- Condensation is seen in cold corners and around bathrooms
What to do?
Photograph the stain with a date, mark its edge with a pencil and watch it for a few days. If there is a wet area on the floor above, have it checked. If there is water near electrical wiring, switch off the relevant circuit and call a specialist.
Frequently asked questions
Can I just paint over the stain?
Painting without removing the source causes the stain to come back.
